This drawing is based on a photograph I took of my Aunt when she was maybe 22 or 23 years old.
She was sitting at the kitchen table in my grandparent’s house. The photo was a bit overexposed and the bright, sunny kitchen made my Aunt’s dark eyes, hair and lipstick appear nearly black. I wanted to get that feeling in my drawing.
Aunt Barbara was the eldest of all my cousins, and she was always so close to being an adult, yet she always felt like she was happy to be one of us kids. I remain close to my Aunt, so the image carries a lot of emotion for me. Even when she was trying to be serious, her wide smile was waiting to spring.
